Coaching with Purpose

One of the best gifts a person can have is a life coach. Sometimes people hire professional life coaches. Other times a mentoring or coaching relationship is developed through school, work, or some other setting. Sometimes two friends may decide to co-coach one another.

Coaching differs from a simple friendship in that it is intentional with specific goals in mind.

Neuroscience of Engagement in the Coaching Relationship

DISCLAIMER: I don’t agree with everything Michael Bungay Stanier says, especially in this video. And I really don’t like that he calls this talk, “How to Make Anyone Love You More,” as if the goal in coaching was to get the person being coached to love the coach!! That sounds pretty self-serving!!

However, drawing from some of the content of his book,The Coaching Habit, which I do recommend, he unpacks the neuroscience of engagement in this 15 minute video and gives lots of excellent tips. Just take what he says with a grain of salt.

Living With Purpose

Oftentimes, as we think about why are we here, we may feel our desires and abilities are at cross-purposes. The more we can get those purposes lined up and see how they fit together, the more fulfilled we become.

The SHAPE inventory is based on material published online by Rick Warren, author of the best-selling book, The Purpose-Driven Life. SHAPE is an acronym for Spiritual gifts, Heart (or passions), Abilities, Personality, and Experiences, all of which shape you into who you are and why you’re here.

The following short (4 min) scene from the movie Chariots of Fire, features Eric Liddell, 1924 Gold-medal and record-breaking Olympian. His sister, who thought he should be devoting his life as a missionary in China, questioned his running. His response should resonate with each of us as we consider how we are shaped: “God made me fast, and when I run, I feel His pleasure.”
